‘Heart of my World’ photography winners announced

Designed to inspire people to have fun, get creative and form a connection with Sovereign and their wider community the ‘heart of my world’ themed photography contest attracted scores of entries from across the south west region.

Anyone living within three miles of a Sovereign community was encouraged to enter the competition. Sovereign has almost 60,000 homes across the south of England, including in Hampshire, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Dorset, Devon, Bristol, Isle of Wight and more.

Organiser of the competition, Sovereign Community Development Officer, Diane Humphries, said: “We were amazed by all the images sent into us and thoroughly enjoyed the creativity and heartfelt entries. It was a tough choice for the judges with so many fantastic photos to choose from.

“Each picture was judged on how the image and words related to the theme, composition, technical level and how it touched our hearts.”

Judged by Diane Humphries and Amy Houghton, Community Development Officers for Sovereign, Dave Munnik, a member of Sovereign's Resident Board Partnership, Communities Director, Matt Buckham, and photographer Richard Jeffery, the winner for each category took home £150 and the runners up £50 in Love to Shop vouchers.

Diane concluded: “It’s hoped that we’ll be able to work further with these gorgeous winning images and amazing amateur photographers to represent Sovereign residents in the organisation’s corporate publications."

Winners and runners up are shown below.

Junior - 1st Place - Szymon Sadel, 15, Isle of Wight

Szymon said: “This is a photo of my wonderful sister. She is the heart of my world and it especially shows during this period of lockdown, where I have to spend more time with her than ever before. On her face I projected “escape the ordinary”. This is because my sister Nina never fails to do things out of the ordinary. This is why she’s the heart of my world.”

Junior - Runner up - Lacey Broughton, 7, Oxfordshire

Lacey’s mum, Kelly, said: “My daughter took this photo of herself and her cat Dot, who has been by her side the last couple of months. Lacey doesn't have any siblings, so Dot has been her best friend and they love playing together.”

Intermediate - 1st Place - Danielle Hallam, 29, Isle of Wight

Danielle said: “These boys have always been the heart of my world and the joy they found from running away from the waves just makes my heart leap.”

Runner up - Lucy Motherway, 28, Oxfordshire

Lucy said “My dog is the heart of my world and this is a photo of her in the heart of her world, her favourite place to walk, the woods. She is a loving and loyal companion and she fills our lives with so much laughter and joy.”

Senior - 1st Place - Esiquiel Coelho, 39, Isle of Wight

Esiquiel said: “During the lockdown as part of our daily exercise we went for a walk to the beach to enjoy the sunset and my daughter and wife starting jumping and asked me to capture that happy moment. My family are the heart of my world.”

Senior - Runner up - Ann Faulkner, 65, Oxfordshire

Ann said “This is a picture of my granddaughter, Kairi. She is the heart of my world. She loves to dance and I am missing her so much.”
