Residents working alongside our board

Sovereign believes that we as residents should have a voice at the very top of its organisation, helping to shape its future plans and the level of service we can expect.

That’s why the Resident and Board Partnership (RBP) exists. We're a team of residents from all around Sovereign’s neighbourhoods.

We meet with Sovereign’s senior managers and Board members around six times a year to:

  • Help to shape its plans
  • Recommend targets for its service levels
  • Keep an eye on how its performing
  • Give a resident perspective on its work
  • Ask for a resident-led review of a service that isn’t performing as well as it should be

Our latest update

Regulator of Social Housing consultation

England’s social housing Regulator is introducing a set of Tenant Satisfaction Measures that will enable social housing residents to see how their landlord is performing. The Regulator has been consulting landlords and resident groups to get their views on the measures it is thinking of introducing.

The RBP is always keen for its voice to be heard at a national level, so members met to collate their feedback to the Regulator. We broadly agreed with most of the proposed tenant satisfaction measures, but fed back about the wording of some of the proposed survey questions and the order in which they would be asked.

The consultation closes on 3 March.

A Day in the Life of Sovereign

The COVID pandemic has meant that, for nearly two years, members have not been able to visit Sovereign's offices and meet the front line employees who actually deliver our services. We've also recently welcomed some new members who are keen to learn more about Sovereign.

To help appreciate what it’s like on Sovereign’s front line, the RBP is developing a series of ‘Day in the Life’ sessions with customer-facing employees: roles like Housing and Income officers, Repairs Schedulers and Operatives, customer Contact Advisors. These sessions will allow members to hear about the challenges faced by Sovereign employees and inform their work helping to shape our future plans.

MBE for our Chair

Joyce Ward, chair of the RBP, has been awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List, for her work in championing the rights of social housing tenants. We’d like to offer huge congratulations to Joyce on this amazing accolade and extend our heartfelt thanks for her continuing work on the RBP, ensuring the voice of the resident is heard loud and clear at the highest levels within Sovereign.

Previous updates

On the 16 October Joyce hosted our annual ‘Get Together’ for engaged residents, which had to be held virtually this year. The RBP & SCG showcased their valuable work by creating a video presentation. This involved members videoing themselves to talk about achievements, what they’d like to see in the future and what’s next on the agenda. This was edited together to create the presentation below. Joyce also hosted sessions on Sovereign’s future plans with our CEO Mark Washer, and a valuable Q&A session with the executive directors.

This ‘Get Together’ has given the RBP and Sovereign a great platform to demonstrate how listening to residents and giving them a voice is an important part of co-creating services that benefit both tenants and landlords. All in all, a great success.

The groups are now moving on to planning our Residents Conference next year, so stay tuned!

We’ve also undergone a big recruitment drive recently which received a lot of interest. We’ve successfully welcomed five new members to the RBP and four new members to the SCG. We’re really excited to have them on board and can’t wait to work together to help make some valuable changes through our work. We have a really diverse group covering various locations, ages and interests and it will be great to collaborate together.
