Case study - Scott, carpenter

Scott Chidzoy

Carpenter Scott was just 20 when he began his apprenticeship with Sovereign, but the last four years have seen big changes in his life, as he’s got the knack of hanging doors – and changing nappies!

“I was only just turning 20 when I started the apprenticeship with Spectrum Property Care – now Sovereign. I’d started the full time diploma a few years previously, in painting and decorating and completed the first year, but I’d been unsuccessful finding a placement. Fast forward a few years and I saw the ad for the open evening in Poole. From the word go I was interested – chatting to all the different trades guys to get a feel for what they did.

“I’m now NVQ L2 qualified in painting and decorating and site carpentry. I think the hardest thing to get my head round was hanging doors. This can be tricky, especially if you’re putting a new one into an existing frame, you have to plane it down just right.

“Studying and working was hard at times over the past four years, especially as my family has grown from one to three children – the littlest is only eight months’ old! But thanks to my partner and my mentors here at work, I never struggled to keep up, they were really supportive and gave me real hands-on guidance. It’s a nice balance and a great working relationship to be allowed to get on with it and find your own pace, but know that help is there if you need it.

“One of the main and best things I do is fit kitchens. It’s lovely going into properties where the kitchen is past its sell by date, ripping the whole thing out and fitting a new one. When I see how happy the residents are with the finished product, it’s really satisfying.”
