Case study - Adapted home brings a happy life

Vincent’s life has been transformed by a new purpose-built home at Sovereign’s Victory Oak development in Dorset.

Suffering from spinal problems, Vincent had struggled with the steps in his former flat in Verwood and so he started to look for a new home through Dorset Home Choice.

When a purpose-built adapted home with a parking space became available at Victory Oak, it was the life changing opportunity Vincent was looking for.

He said: “I kept falling down the stairs. I never got out. I was trapped in my own home. I was like a prisoner, but now I’ve got my life back.”

But it’s about providing more than a home; it’s about building great places with strong communities.

So as well as the 210 homes on the former Second World War military hospital site, Sovereign have invested in new community facilities as well as creating a new 17 hectare nature reserve too.

“I can get out now, and that’s a massive thing for me. I can go out for fresh air, pop out for coffee or go and see friends. I’ll take the scooter out on the accessible walks into the forest. I’m happy here.”

As well as major adaptations such as level access, a kitchen with adjustable height surfaces, a side-opening oven, wider doors and a large wet room, his new home also has minor adaptations which all help with Vincent’s independence. It’s got lower light switches and higher plug points. “All the little things like that help,” said Vincent.

“It’s been life changing and my quality of life is 100% better. This has improved my mental wellbeing too. I’m now coming off antidepressants and my new home has definitely helped with that.”

Built by Drew Smith and delivered in partnership with Homes England, Victory Oak is named after the famous tree on the site, believed to have been planted by Dwight Eisenhower to celebrate the end of the Second World War.
