Case study - Mark overcomes back injury to start a new career

Mark Telling

Mark, 44, is a forklift driver for Nationwide, a window replacement company based in Swindon.

He’s really happy in the position and after six months in the job has settled in well, meeting colleagues and adapting quickly to his new role. He said: “I’d been out of work for about eight months when I first met Shay, the employment officer from Sovereign. He came to my house a couple of times to meet me, and get to know what I was looking for in terms of work. I’d previously been in construction but because of a back injury I was looking to get into a new field.

“Shay very quickly understood what I was asking for. I didn’t want part-time or agency work, I wanted to find something permanent. He helped me go for my forklift licence and then, within weeks, he’d found this job for me. He couldn’t have been more helpful. We worked on the application together, and here I am. It’s progressing so well – they are already suggesting an NVQ in management. Who knows where I’ll be this time next year?

“I’d definitely recommend asking Sovereign for support if people are looking for training or employment, they’ve got good contacts and good people who can set you on the right path.”
