Sovereign welcomes social housing investment boost

Date: 26 June 2018

Responding to the £1.67bn ‘social housing deal’, confirmed by Communities Secretary James Brokenshire MP today, Mark Washer, Chief Executive at Sovereign, said:

“This investment, which crucially includes money for social rent, as well as greater freedom for our local authority partners, is a step in the right direction to building the range of homes we need.

“We work in some of the least affordable areas of the country and see first-hand how quality affordable housing can transform people’s lives and help communities grow. Therefore we’ll be keen to explore the opportunity this offers for us to play our part and increase the supply of social rented homes.”

Sovereign is a major housing association, managing nearly 57,000 homes across the south and south west of England.

Sovereign is also a major developer of affordable housing, having built 1,256 homes last year with plans to increase development to around 1,900 homes a year by 2022 – while retaining a focus on affordable homes to rent and buy.

As well as direct delivery and Section 106, Sovereign also builds through Joint Ventures with major house builders and is currently creating a formal partnership with a local authority to build the homes the area needs, more quickly.
