Ground-breaking marks start for new homes for the New Year

Date: 21 December 2017

Work has begun to transform two former garage sites at Melbourne Road and Tensing Road in Christchurch into much-needed new affordable homes.

Sovereign Housing Association has been working with Christchurch Borough Council to get this scheme through planning which on completion will provide seven much needed new homes for shared ownership to the borough.

Representatives from Sovereign and the borough council attended site to meet development contractor, Drew Construction Group for an official ground-breaking last week (11 December) to mark the start of development.

Helen Hann, Sovereign’s Divisional Director, said: “We’ve consulted with the local community throughout planning and are really pleased to be working with Christchurch Borough Council on this new development, who’ve been really supportive. I’m looking forward to seeing the transformation take place and welcoming residents into their new homes next year.”

Councillor Peter Hall, Chairman of Resources Committee, Christchurch Borough Council said “Building affordable housing is vital for local people and so I’m very pleased to see the commencement of this small development.

“It’s especially positive to see this unused space is now making way for brand new homes for people in this popular area of Christchurch.”

On completion four two-bedroom and three four-bedroom houses will provide much needed affordable homes for the borough’s residents. With all seven homes for sale through shared ownership they will offer a valuable first step on the property ladder for residents otherwise priced out of the property market.

Paul Gillard, Project Director at Drew Construction Group commented: “We are very pleased to be working on this project for Sovereign. As a local main contractor we understand the importance of providing high quality affordable housing for local people and will ensure that the majority of our supply chain is also sourced from the area.”

The new developments received planning permission in 2016.

Completion of the new homes is expected in summer 2018.
