Training with Sovereign
West Berkshire Training Consortium (WBTC) has delivered NVQ training to local companies and their staff for the last 20 years, which lets young people aged between 16 and 24, find work with local businesses.

Skilled workers such as electricians, plumbers and other trades people are particularly hard to find locally according to the Community Plan produced by West Berkshire Partnership.

Bonnie Beesspacer Matt Garvey Business Development Manager at WBTC says;

"There are plenty of young people waiting for work, but we need more local businesses to help with the programme. Modern Apprenticeships give young people and local businesses a fresh way of looking at recruitment."

Many companies are involved with the programme such as Sovereign Housing Association, Newbury Building Society, Vodafone, Thames Valley Police and other local businesses in West Berkshire. Young people are provided with paid work experience and get a recognised qualification.

For example, Sovereign Housing owns nearly 7,000 houses in the area and needs plumbers, electricians, carpenters, heating engineers, painters and decorators for repairs and maintenance work. By recruiting apprentices, Sovereign can give a young person the chance to gain qualifications whilst they are working and the organisation also helps to increase the number of local skilled workers. Employers can take advantage of funding through the programme too.

Ann Santry, Chief Executive of Sovereign says:

"The Modern Apprenticeship programme has proved a complete success for us and it benefits our employees. We've already given a permanent job to one of our former Modern Apprentices and another five are being trained at the moment. These include a plumber, a gas heating apprentice and two apprentice electricians."

If you're an employer who would like to become involved with the scheme, please call the WBTC on 01635 35975.
