Sovereign launches £2.9 million scheme
at St Donats

Sovereign Housing Association has launched a £2.9 million scheme at St Donats in Newbury.

The association has redeveloped the former home of Camp Hopson Department Store founder Joseph Hopson to provide one studio apartment, five one bedroom apartments, 11 two bedroom apartments and nine three bedroom houses. Of those, five of the apartments are in the main house and have been refurbished, with the remaining apartments and houses being newly built on site. The homes are available for a mix of rental and part buy part rent.

In more recent times, St Donats was a sheltered housing scheme operated by Sovereign Housing Association before residents moved to brand new accommodation at Carnarvon Place in 2007.

As part of the celebrations, Joseph Hopson’s grandson Jonathan (currently the Managing Director of Camp Hopson) will attend the event to officially open the scheme and unveil a plaque erected outside the main house.

Phil Just , Sovereign Housing Association’s Divisional Director of Operations, said the development at St Donats Place was unique and built to a very high specification.

“All of the two bedroom flats available for part buy part rent have ensuites, all properties have built in wardrobes and the houses all have sun rooms,” he said.

“Prior to redevelopment, the main building boasted an array of original features including stained glass windows, fireplaces, parquet flooring and an oak front door and these have been retained as part of the refurbishment works.

“Our original intention was to sell the site for private development to part fund Carnarvon Place. However, because we received some grant funding to Carnarvon Place from the Housing Corporation, we have been able to retain St Donats and redevelop the site ourselves to provide much needed affordable housing in the heart of Newbury.”

Mr Just said the properties at St Donats had proved very popular and had attracted a large number of applications from prospective tenants, with properties available for part buy part rent being snapped up in record time.
