Sovereign looks for budding new photographers in East Wichel

Date: 19 July 2010

Sovereign South+West

Sovereign South+West has been focusing on new ways of increasing community cohesion and helping a new community develop in East Wichel over the last 18 months. As part of this, Sovereign has worked with local partners to support the Little Stars toddler group, organise a new youth club and also launch other initiatives to help people settle in.

The new youth club takes place every Wednesday from 6.30 until 8pm. It has already been a big hit with young adults in the area. Sovereign is also aware that it is really important to have the chance to learn new skills at the youth club. Therefore, to encourage all the local budding photographers Sovereign is now launching the East Wichel photography project.

The photography project will enable local people to display their best pictures of East Wichel in a bound book. East Wichel residents have five themes to take their photographs of: moving into new homes; building work and changes in East Wichel; friends and neighbours; environment / green spaces and recreation / having fun. A maximum of ten photographs across the themes can be entered and the deadline for photographs is Friday 6 August.

There was a launch of the project at the youth club on Wednesday 14 July and there was also a well attended photography master workshop which took place on Saturday 17 July at the StoweAway between 11am and 2pm.

Terry Black, Neighbourhood Investment Coordinator for Sovereign South+West, noted, “The East Wichel photography project aims to highlight some local photography talent and also give people the chance to learn new photography skills. We are also looking forward to seeing all the photos and then giving residents the chance to see their hard work appear in a book just for them.”
