Residents celebrate new homes with massive party
Over 350 residents and other guests celebrated new Sovereign Housing Association homes at King William Heights in Devonport with a massive community event and street party on Friday. Kathy James, Sovereign’s Divisional Director, explained: “Over the past few months residents have also taken part in a range of workshops and competitions so that they can show off the results on Friday. These will include a dancing display with world-famous choreographer Colin Sangster from the Royal School of Ballet, a flag procession, hanging basket competition and the launch of the book ‘Devonport - a Portrait of a Community’. The workshops have been jointly organised by Plymouth-based RiO (Real ideas Organisation). Ed Whitelaw, their Lead Developer, said: Ann Santry, Sovereign Group Chief Executive, added: “This is a great example of a number of agencies working in partnership to help deliver the regeneration of Devonport. It would not have been possible without our developers, Leadbitter Construction, and the full collaboration of many of our stakeholders including Plymouth City Council, the Devonport Regeneration Company Partnership, the Regional Development Agency, the Housing Corporation, the Government Office for the South West and the Princes Trust. “Once the Plymouth City Council flats on the site were demolished, we redesigned the area to provide 90 new homes for rent, shared ownership and outright sale. We also listened to the needs of the local residents. Many hoped to live in a house rather than a flat so we’re really pleased to be able to include 69 houses.” Local MP Linda Gilroy officially opened the scheme. The day also featured an appearance from Plymouth Albion Rugby Club stars; a Wildworks Tea Party; a circus skills workshop; Coastal Net sea creatures; a football skills session by David Pook; body art and magical faces; Music Zone percussion; the Stiltskin Theatre Group; information stands for many of Devonport’s agencies and service providers plus food stalls and refreshments.
