At the Devonport Urban Village in Plymouth, Sovereign is the development partner for a complex neighbourhood regeneration consortium. Led by the Devonport Regeneration Company NDC the partnership involves a number of funding agencies, both local and regional, including Plymouth Council, the South West of England Regional Development Agency (SWERDA), the Government Office (GOSW) and The Princes Foundation. We have worked closely together to develop a design and funding package that meets the exacting architectural aspirations of the Urban Village Framework, while re-providing sufficient affordable housing to accommodate the residents being displaced from the 70 flats initially due to be demolished. The redevelopment of Devonport is a key strategic aim of Plymouth City Council. The overall project will last between 10 - 15 years and involve the provision some 1,200 units of new or refurbished mixed tenure housing. Close resident involvement in both the design framework and the delivery partnership has helped achieve support for the development of a high density, mixed tenure, non-traditional scheme for 90 new homes. Our partnership approach with local and regional stakeholders has secured substantial extra public funding of over £1.80M from the Council, the RDA and the DRC, to make this possible, and to ensure that a high quality of urban design and environmental sustainability will be key features of this flagship project.
