Lifetime homes
It is a requirement that all public sector homes in England will be built to Lifetime Homes Standard from 2011, with many planning policies already requiring the Lifetime Homes standard in new developments. Design features for Lifetime Homes ensure that a new home will meet the needs of most households – at all stages of their lives. They provide accessible and adaptable accommodation for everyone, from young families to older people and individuals with a temporary or permanent physical impairment.
Where the housing needs of a particular area warrant it, we build our homes to meet the Lifetime Homes Standard.
The Lifetime Homes concept was developed in 1991 and encompasses 16 design features that ensure a new house or flat will meet the needs of most households. This does not mean that every family is surrounded by things that they do not need. The emphasis is on accessibility and design features that make the home flexible enough to meet whatever comes along in life. The overall aim of The Lifetime Homes Standard is to make homes suitable for people at all stages of their lives.
Lifetime homes suit all lifestyles, so people moving out will find plenty of people wanting to move in. But people who see their home as a long-term investment, and do not want to move, will be reassured that their home is built to The Lifetime Homes Standard.
