The Government launched the Decent Homes Standard to ensure that all social housing landlords provide homes that are of a good, livable standard by 2010. According to the Government’s standards, decent homes must be in a reasonable state of repair, have reasonably modern facilities and services, and provide a reasonable degree of thermal comfort.
We believe that every resident should have the opportunity to live in a decent home. That is why we have invested over £11 million to improve our housing stock, which means that we have already exceeded the Government’s Decent Homes Standards some two years ahead of the 2010 deadline.
Decent homes are not only comfortable places to live; they play an essential role in creating thriving communities. There is evidence that links poor-quality housing with anti-social behaviour, which leads to communities gaining bad reputations, becoming unpopular and eventually breaking down. Meeting and exceeding the Decent Homes Standard is a vital part of our strategy to create sustainable communities where people want to live.
